2014 VW Jetta Helios Tribute Car – Helios Redux
FMS Automotive creates a tribute car to honor the original VW Jetta GLI Helios Edition
In 1989, VW released one of its rarest production cars of all time. It was a hand built specimen from the production plant in Wolfsburg, Germany. The rare gem wasn’t a high-performance race edition with extra power and exclusive suspension upgrades, but was themed around its Helios blue paint.

2014 VW Jetta Widebody – FMS Automotive
Like all good stories, this one has its share of trials and tribulations, but there’s also a happy ending. And unlike most project car builds, that tend to meet adversity once inside the workshop, this car was almost derailed just days after the concept was born. “You wouldn’t believe what we’ve been through with this build,” said Gil Plasencia from FMS Automotive in Cerritos, CA. “It’s come a long way in a short time and it was a fierce battle at times, but the blood, sweat and tears were worthwhile once the completed car rolled into the light of day.

Behind-the-scenes: VW Jetta Widebody Build for SEMA 2013
In a time-honored tradition, cool VWs are built each year for the SEMA automotive trade show, and this year is no different. Southern California accessory specialists, FMS Automotive from Cerritos CA, decided to build a pair of badass street sedans to wow showgoers. The two VW Jetta builds would feature one car that’s easily replicated, while the other would be an over-the-top project for inspiration and admiration. This is the story how of the latter came into existence; the build of the Jetta widebody.

Behind-the-scenes: VW Jetta Helios Tribute Car Build for SEMA 2013
Available for only one year, the 1989 Helios blue Jetta GLI is still held in high regard by the VW community, even to this day. Even though its exterior color and interior trim were the only real defining features, its exclusivity comes from it being limited to 1500 examples produced, forever inking it a spot in watercooled VW history.
So it should come as no surprise that when FMS Automotive decided to create a pair of 2014 Jettas for the 2013 SEMA show, a Helios tribute car would be part of the proposal.

SEMA 2012 Volkswagen Beetles – Beetle Bash
We gathered all the SEMA 2012 VW Beetles for a unique photo shoot.
With the launch of the latest Beetle, VW created an edgier design, less cuddly than before and one that’s been attracting more aftermarket interest. So VW of America planned to unleash some modified Bugs at the annual SEMA show in Las Vegas last November, encouraging a number of tuners to have a go.

2012 Volkswagen Beetle Turbo – SoCal Surf Bug
To mark the launch of the new 2012 Beetle, Volkswagen chose to work with a few companies to build several cars for the SEMA show. You can see some of the examples in our full SEMA report elsewhere in this issue and enjoy the car we built here. In one of the final issues of Eurotuner Magazine we ran a vehicle design competition and the guys at Volkswagen of America liked the entries so much they asked us to build a Surf Beetle based on several of the renderings.

FMS Automotive 1956 and 2012 Beetles
The FMS Automotive booth gets a sort of “then and now” theme, with one original 1956 Volkswagen Beetle, and a 2012 model. The ’56 bug was restored from the ground up and modified with a performance powertrain, four-wheel disc brakes, and extensive custom bodywork. The 2012 Beetle, on the other hand, gets a two-tone paint scheme as a tribute to custom VWs of old. The car rides on H&R springs and TSW wheels, and gets a custom dual exhaust and Rostra LED lights.

FMS Classic Beetle
As the yin to its Modern Beetle interpretation’s yang, FMS Automotive has restored a 1956 Beetle to perfection, and then added some more trick bits. It now features extensive bodywork, two-tone paint, a high-performance powertrain, and an upgraded chassis with four-wheel disc brakes and large aluminum wheels. The interior is fully clad in leather; headrests were deemed dispensable—which is fine by us, given this car’s purist approach.

The Beetles’ presence was certainly felt – especially the Super Beetle in the H&R booth (pictured above). Out at the FMS Automotive booth, the company had a sharp contrast of modern vs. classic on display, while the ‘Beach Battle-Cruiser’ was close by.

We’re back at FMS Automotive to fit a RNS-315 head unit, H&R lowering springs and 18″ wheels. We’ve been living with and working on our 2011 Project Jetta 2.0 for several months now, trying to make it friendlier to the tuner market. In the previous issue we fitted a VW Accessories body kit, which certainly gave the car a greater curb appeal, but it needed so much more.
